Frequently Asked Questions

Compost: (2)

Is your compost listed as one of the selected composts required by Denver Water?

Yes, we are listed on Denver Water’s list of approved vendors.

How much compost should we use for sod?

Four yards per 1000 square feet is the recommended amount. We recommend spreading the compost evenly over the areas of both sod and planting beds. Till the material to the deepest depth possible and rake smooth.

Mulch: (2)

Should we install landscape fabric under wood mulch?

We recommend not installing fabric when applying the mulch at a depth of approximately 4”. However, we do recommend using it under the barks.

Do we need to install the mulch 4” thick?

If mulch is less than 4” thick weeds will grow more easily. It is recommended that mulch be installed this deep to help prevent weed growth.

Sod: (1)

Is there really a difference in sod vendors?

Yes there is a difference in quality of sod. The soil where the sod is grown in can be very sandy. The sandy soil does not retain moisture and is much harder to get established. There are also different types of seed used. Most people however, use Kentucky Blue Grass. Which nearly all of the sod vendors use a blend that is mostly Blue Grass however, has other grass seeds so that the sod adapts to the environment.
